“but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2
Peter 3:18, NKJV)
A few weeks ago I heard an older adult, who, obviously had not seen a young man
for some time, ask the young man, “ARE YOU STILL GROWING?” The
question was asked as if the questioner was surprised to see the height of the young
man given his age. It was stated as if the young man should have stopped growing
years ago.
I thought about the question and I want to ask you the same question today, “Are
you still growing?” The difference between my asking you the question and the
question asked by the older adult to the young man lies in its implication. The
implication of the question asked by the older adult to the young man was one of
surprise that he “would” still be growing. The implication in my asking you the
question is that I would be surprised if you “are not” still growing.
You see as Christians we should constantly and consistently be growing. Growing
not physically but growing in “grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ.” We should be growing in the use of our Spiritual gifts for God’s service.
We should be growing in knowledge of what the Lord’s will is for our lives. We
should be learning more about Jesus our Savior and how we could be more like
Him.
Therefore, when I ask the question, I pray you do not respond as that young man
did by saying, “I don’t know.” I pray your answer will be an adamant “YES.”
“Yes I am growing.” “Yes, I am becoming more like Jesus.” “Yes, I know and am
pursuing God’s will for my life.” “Yes I am growing in my understanding of my
place in the Kingdom of God.” I pray your answer to my question is “Yes.”
So let me ask you one more time, ARE YOU STILL GROWING?
